Global Rich List – see how rich you are

Posted by Lara on May 16, 2013 in Notes to inspire.

This website is amazing! They had the following to say about why they created this site:

In this era of austerity, we’re still as obsessed with wealth (or our apparent lack of it) as ever. But while we may not all be oil barons or oligarchs, the vast majority of us are better off than we realise. We wanted to help people to see this. And raise some much needed funds for our favourite charities while we did it.

You type in your annual income into the box and press “show my results” and immediately your wealth is put into some sharp perspective – you might even learn a thing or two – give it a try!

This site is wonderful to help you determine which meals to eat. Depending on your goal i.e. weight loss, muscle build or maintain they will suggest a calorie intake per day split over protein, carbs and fat. You specify how many meals you want to eat per day, press “generate” and it will give you a full menu. Read More

So you want to jump on the fast moving Bandwagon and open a Online Store? Well you would be right to as it certainly does seem to be where the world of retail is heading!

However, before you make the leap it would be wise to first consider the steps that go into creating this store or else you might just find yourself running behind the cart holding on for dear life thinking, “how did this get so complicated!?!”

The bottom line is, opening a online store is as much work as opening a physical shop.

Below I have listed the similarities and the differences between the two so that when you embark on this exciting adventure you will at least know just how hard you are going to have to work in order to catch up to that expeditious wagon and will therefore be able to summon your energy beforehand.

PHYSICAL SHOP

ONLINE STORE

Rent: You will have to rent or buy a property from which to sell out ofHosting & Rent: You will have to rent a space on the web from which to host your store. While this might be considerably cheaper than renting a physical store, depending on what you are selling, you might still need to rent a space to store your stock.

Shop Design:You will need to design the shop in such a way that it makes it easy and inviting for your clients to shop.Website Design:You will need to work closely with your web design company to create an online store that is both visually pleasing and easy to navigate.
Delivery:You need to organize your stock to be delivered to your storeDelivery:Not only will you need to collect your stock but with an online store you also have to arrange for it to be packaged and dispatched to a courier company to deliver to your customer.Should the customer need to return the item you will then have to be able to accept delivery from the customer and potentially start the who process of packaging and dispatching again.
Stocking your shop:Once your stock has arrived you will need to arrange it within your store. A detailed record will need to be kept at all times of what stock has been bought and sold and at what price so that you can determine stock levels and profits vs costs.Stocking your store:It is at this level that an online store really shows its benefits. While product loading can be time consuming at first, once it is done it never has to be done again as long as the stock remains the same. When it comes to stock taking, a good online store will create all the records of stock levels and profits for you, potentially saving you an infinite amount of time.
Banking:You will need to set up a company bank accountBanking:For taking online payments you need to set up a merchant account.
Payments:In a store you can accept a number of forms of payment, namely cash, card, EFT & check.Payments:Online you have to work through an external company who can function as a intermediary between you, the vendor and the financial institution – your bank.There are a number of companies that handle this, all with their own billing systems. 3 of the most common in South Africa being;

VCS

2Checkout

and Pay Pal

You will not be able to sign up for their services until you have set up your merchant account.

As you can see from the very basics of setting up a store, going online is not as simple as just choosing a website design.

However, muster up enough energy to catch this bandwagon and you might just find yourself cruising all the way to the next stop, don’t believe me, just look at these crazy examples

Most people know I have an infatuation with all things Scandi. One thing in particular is Copenhagen and the feast of aesthetic that comes with it. We just returned to Cape Town after part of our team headed out to Copenhagen on an exploratory trip. Watch this space for updates on what we’re planning.
